Happy Christmas, Science of Deduction!
Okay, so we have an upcoming High School Christmas Party on December 14th, and we have this surprise gift-giving, ‘Monito, Monita.’ Basically you have to draw a random paper with a student/teacher name on it. There are 8 days of gift-giving. For the first seven days, there are required gift descriptions. Only the teachers are authorised to present your gift to your Monito/Monita. Then on the eighth day, you personally present a special gift to that person, thus revealing the mystery gift-giver.
Since, I was out of town when the high school drew out names our class monitor (AKA my cousin) drew out my Monito/Monita for me, it turns out it was my monitor’s name on it, so no mysterious gift-giver for her.
Here are the people involved in the whole ‘Monito, Monita’ thing:
Teachers:
Ma’am Lan
Ma’am Noemi
Ma’am Cha (cousin)
Freshmen:
Iris
Micah
Awit
Jillian
Jerome
Van
Ezev
Sophomore(s):
Ronald ~:p
Juniors:
Nicole
Abi
Meg
Colin
Zaviel
Caleb
Seniors:
Alyssa (me!)
Janna
Shekaina
Garlyn
Rodelson
Raymond
Jeffrey
Arvin
Now, I will try to figure out who my mystery gift-giver is. I’m kinda inspired by reading some Sherlock Holmes stories.
Day 1: Something Sweet
I received a small M&M’s peanut candies, and a small KitKat.
Teachers:
Ma’am Lan (I have no idea how she could obtain a KitKat & M&M’s)
Ma’am Cha (cousin) (She bought her gift with me beside her, and also revealed who her Monito is)
Ma’am Noemi
Freshmen:
Iris (She would’ve given me Loacker instead)
Micah
Awit
Jillian
Jerome (A frugal person)
Van (A frugal person)
Ezev (his brother has peanut allergies)
Sophomore(s):
Ronald ~:p (frugal)
Juniors:
Nicole (A frugal person)
Abi
Meg
Zaviel (Has peanut allergies. No way that peanut M&M’s are in his house)
Colin
Caleb (Would’ve given me imported sweets)
Seniors:
Alyssa (me!) (Duh!)
Janna (Knows I am not fond of peanuts, later reveals that her Monito/Monita likes pink)
Shekaina (Knows I am not fond of peanuts, also frugal. Later reveals that her Monita is a freshman.)
Garlyn
Rodelson (A frugal person, absent today. I found out his Monito/Monita when I saw him making his gift.)
Raymond
Jeffrey (A frugal person)
Arvin (He was absent today so he couldn’t possibly submit his gift)
Day 2: Something to wear
I received a blue pair of earrings. Didn’t leave me much clues though.
Teacher(s):
Ma’am Noemi
Freshmen:
Micah
Awit
Jillian
Juniors:
Abi (absent. impossible)
Meg (came late, my gift was available before she came to school)
Colin
Seniors:
Garlyn
Raymond
Day 3: Something the person needs
I received two coffee sachets since I sleep a lot in school.
Teacher(s):
Ma’am Noemi
Freshmen:
Micah (Second on my list. Close friends with Jill)
Awit
Jillian (The top of my guess list. One day I heard her talking with Ma’am Cha about the ‘sleepy person’)
Juniors:
Colin (Came late for school)
Seniors:
Garlyn
Raymond
Day 4: Something of the person’s favourite colour
Hmm. So I received a bundle of dark blues — whistle, Nips, push pins, pen, marbles, paper clips, metallic bookmark, & glitter. It feels like Micah would send these.
Teacher(s):
Ma’am Noemi
Freshmen:
Micah (Micah puts effort in everything. She might’ve gathered a lot of dark blues in her sleep.)
Awit
Jillian (Still on top. Rodelson told me he knew my gift-giver. Rodelson and Jillian are very close friends.)
Seniors:
Garlyn
Raymond
Day 5: Something that’ll make the person happy
I received some sort of football thingie that has the Australian flag mark on it. World knows I like the United Kingdom flag. The person may have not noticed it was Australian.
Teacher(s):
Ma’am Noemi (I can’t think of a way that she could get a hold of an Australian football thingie)
Freshmen:
Micah (same reason as Ma’am Noemi)
Awit (Her father is in Australia. Somehow the football thingie was in her possession)
Jillian (Still on top. Now Jeff and Meg told me they knew the person giving me gifts. Coincidentally, like Atoy, they are close friends with Jill))
Seniors:
Garlyn (Her parents are in some Middle Eastern country.)
Raymond (I’d scratch this boy off the list. Since our boys are well known to put much less effort than girls on gifts.)
Day 6: Something you made for the person
I received a big, fat NOTHING. It was a Monday so I assumed the person might have whipped up something for me during the weekend, but naddah!
So there are only two left on my list, two female freshmen:
Awit (We’re not that close, so conscience tells her I might be a little bitter if I don’t receive a gift. Plus, she’s a ‘pure’ freshman, unlike Jill who’s been with the high school though she was in sixth grade. Awit should feel the slightest of shame if she wouldn’t give a gift to me, a senior.)
Jillian (Last one standing on my list. I’m fairly close with her, and she knows I don’t get bitter easily. So conscience tells her it’s fine to skip a day on me.)
Day 7: Something that reminds you of that person
I didn’t receive anything again today. The people absent were Rodelson and Jillian. Rodelson is outta my list. So the fact that Jill was not present at school made me sure that she is ‘the one.’
Jillian arrived after lunch for rehearsals, and I still didn’t get a gift. This time I interrogated her.
Here’s the conversation:
Me: Jill, do you know the person giving me gifts?
Jill: Yeah, why?
Me: I haven’t received a gift since yesterday. Do you know why the person’s not giving me?
Jill: Well, she—
Me: She?!
Jill: Oops.
Me: Okay. That’s fine. She—then what?
Jill: She wanted to give the two gifts on the Christmas party.
Me: Oh. Okay. I see. Thanks
Jill stated her reason about the gifts a little speedy and too sure which made me really think that she did not receive that info from a different person, because she didn’t even paused to think about it! It was all from her!
Bad acting there, Jill!
Super sleuthing there, me! ~:p
Day 8 (Christmas Party): Something worth P100
Yeh, the day finally arrived! So after some fun, wet games, it was gift-giving time. Okay, so after you give your gift to your Monito/Monita, you guess the person who’s giving you gifts. After I gave my gift to Ma’am Cha, I announced that my guess was Jillian. I was right, of course! Her gift was a blue elephant stuffed toy that has a United Kingdom ID lace which has a note that says, ‘something that reminds me of you.’ Hooked to the bottom of the lace was a lamionated couloured drawing of the UK flag which has the note that says, ‘something I made for you.’
So yeh, she wasn’t kidding that she’ll give the late gifts on the Christmas Party. Thank you, Jillian, for the awesome gifts! Thank you, Sherlock Holmes, for your mad sleuthing skills! I learned like 2% of your science of deduction. Hey, I’ve only read the first book, ‘A Study in Scarlet.’
Happy Christmas!
